Purpose of the job

  • Provide necessary in-house legal services.


Required Work Experience

  • At least 5 years of experience as a practicing attorney engaged in corporate, transactional, and/or contracting work
  • 3 year(s) of experience in the health insurance or a related healthcare industry

Required Education

  • Juris Doctorate

Required Licenses

  • Active, current, and unrestricted license to practice law.

Required Certifications

  • Admission to State Bar

  • Maintain and develop expertise in healthcare, insurance and information technology issues relevant to BCBSAZ and its affiliates.
  • Draft, review and assist with negotiation of vendor, provider, employer and other contracts and related documents, as assigned.
  • Provide legal advice to various BCBSAZ divisions/departments and affiliates, including statutory and regulatory compliance with state and federal laws.
  • Participate on and provide legal advice to cross-functional teams responsible for implementing mandates and company goals and initiatives.
  • Provide annual and ad-hoc training to BCBSAZ and its affiliates on various legal issues.
  • Represent BCBSAZ at certain local and national conferences, as needed.
  • Perform public speaking activities both internally and to community organizations concerning relevant legal issues.
  • The position requires a full-time work schedule.  Full-time is defined as working at least 40 hours per week, plus any additional hours as requested or as needed to meet business requirements.
  • Perform all other duties as assigned.

  • Intermediate skill in use of office equipment, including copies, fax machines, scanner and telephones
  • Intermediate PC proficiency
  • Intermediate proficiency in spreadsheet, database, and word processing
